And, clearly, you were hurt by this situation. People (including me) are giving you feedback for ways that you can avoid experiencing that sort of thing in the future. Just accept that the situation happened, that you played a role in allowing yourself to get sucked into his game, learn from that experience, and move on. Whatever your view on plots, two docs from the CDC actually did say they’d amped up the threat to the straight population beyond the clinical evidence. AIDS has a special place. We can blame smokers for getting sick, and we can blame the morbidly obese–except if we’re blaming Archer Daniels Midland for corn syrup, or unless they’re poor in which case we blame Walmart. We can “lovingly confront” [according to a syllabus in a faith-based busybody class I encountered] pretty much any self-destructive lifestyle except sexual activity. AIDS patients are victims and sufferers, except if they’re hemophiliacs–should there be any left–in which case they are invisible. We can remark on any number of risky lifestyles and their consequences except for AIDS. We’re supposed to act as if it came down like a meteor and just…struck somebody. As it happens, there is a normal human tendency to separate oneself from a serious problem by saying, “I’m not like that.” IOW, I don’t drive like a maniac. I am careful where I go. I don’t leave my kid in the car while I run into the convenience store. My kids know what to do. You feel safer that way. Not with AIDS.
